Pet Peeve

My cute hubby is a darn hard workin man. He is a carpet layer. Every day he carries massive rolls of carpet up stairs & through buildings. You should see his major buff arms. He is a master of his trade. The shop gives him all of the hard jobs. The intricate patterns, the thick, wool berber, the multi-million dollar castles & homes that line the foothills of the wasatch front. He works his tail off and sweats a gallon every. day. It's a hard way to make a living but he does it & rarely complains despite his chronic pain.

A month ago Jer got a phone call from a lady who lives in Orem. She was desperate. She asked him if he could install some used carpet in her home that she had gotten through her sister. He explained how he didn't really install used carpet. That it was hard to make money that way and that he was booked up for the next two weeks.
She called the next day. And the next. She explained that she was a widow and they had very little money to get carpet in their home. They were living under conditions that were awful. She was a widow, she said. My hubby has a heart of gold & would help anyone who needed it so he scheduled her for two weeks out.
She called him about every three days making sure he was coming, sharing stories and chatting like she was lonely. Jer felt so bad for her and finally made the time to go get her house back in order for this poor woman!

He came home from the job that night just exasperated. I asked if the carpet was too badly used. He said no, it was fairly new. I asked if the conditions made him feel bad. He just shook his head and told me this.

Her home was a 5000 square foot MANSION on a hill. Overlooking the lake & in a neighborhood fit for kings. She had two brand new SUV's in the four car garage & enough cement around the home to park forty cars.
When he arrived a 50ish year old woman greeted him and thanked him for helping her recover her home, that being a widow was so hard and that she was struggling quite a bit. She led him to the rec room in the back of the home attached to the extra garage with the RV parked inside. The crumpled used carpet was in the rec room lying next to the pool table, leather furniture & arcade games & full kitchen in a big heap. She explained that it was a godsend that they recieve this used carpet. Jer Looked over the job, carefully explained that he would install the living room & sitting room & dining rooms and she would have carpet left over but he would be unable to do the three stairways with the used carpet.

She asked if he would take the carpet away and dispose of the rest and Jer offered his standard-haul-away-your-crap-price and she reluctantly said ok. Jer went to work in the house, finished, was packing up his tools and making up the invoice when the woman walked in the room. She told him that her husband pulled out two pieces of the used carpet & rolled them up and so could he please discount the price of hauling it away and could he please help her HUSBAND carry the rolls in the 5th garage? Jer kindly said his price of hauling away the GARBAGE was the same. He also said, husband? I thought you were a widow? She said I was. This is my new husband.
Unbelievable.

wow! sounds like the whole "widow" thing worked so well for her that she decided to stick with it. i don't know what people are thinking, sometimes.

Unbelievable! Sounds like a bad case of entitlement syndrome.

What a complete joke! I can't believe some people. He will never be nice to anyone again. She has a lot of nerve.

I have some older eggs we can use on her house. We can make a family night out of it. I'll bring the treats and you can do the lesson - one on honesty maybe. Then as the activity we can turn our kids loose to "remodel" the widow's home. I am so angry for Jeremy - he is always so helpful and happy to be so. FHE at 8:00(it will be dark by then!!)

I can't believe it. Jeremy should send her a bill in the mail--and tell her it will be sent to collections if unpaid. That is so rude of her
